
As the capital of Rodopi Prefecture, Komotini with a population of 43.326 residents is the base of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace District, administrative center of Thrace and home of Dimikritio University of Thrace. It is a modern urban center that is constantly developing in every field.
The first written testimony of this «polisma», as the Emperor Ioannis Kantakouzinos the 6th calls Komotini, appears with the name «Koumoutzina» 14th century. Komotini was then a small insignificant village, station of the Roman Egnatia Highway. From the 14th century Koumoutzina began to take the form of a town, when people came and installed in it from the neighboring Byzantine city Mosynoupoli.
